Modified Public Domain Art
A downloadable asset pack
Please don't donate unless you end up using this in a project you make money off of. More importantly, I'd love to hear if you find this useful, even for non-commercial use (and might be more likely to keep doing this).
All images are modified public domain images from various sources, some from https://www.oldbookillustrations.com/, some from various museum websites.
Right now they fit into the following categories:
- Landscape drawings or paintings where I removed people and other elements that could make the relevance of the image more narrow.
- Frames and other layout elements which you could use for character portraits, covers, your own layout, etc.
- Interesting elements (people, buildings) removed from a larger image and with iconography (e.g. crosses) removed that might be unsuitable for a fantasy game. A subfolder contains a bunch of images of keys.
- Interesting symbols that could be magical emblems, part of a puzzle, symbols of an organization, etc.
There is some overlap between these, for instance a bunch of the images under "frames" have had elements taken out of them and put under "glyphs".
I'll probably keep adding to this over time.
The resulting images are also public domain, whenever the original images are in the public domain in your jurisdiction. If you use this in a project, acknowledgments are appreciated but not required.
Note that some of the images, particularly the Gods' Man package, are public domain in the US (due to being published in 1929) but may not be public domain everywhere.

Omg this is gorgeous! Also: isn't artwork that was published in 1929 public domain now? Source?
Yup, that's why Gods' Man is in there now. I just put a warning because other countries have different rules for what's public domain.
This is a trove.
Crisp illustrations, lots of variety. The Gods' Man pack in particular is excellent (author isn't listed, but it's Lynd Ward.)
